Data Protection in the GCC
Live Event Date: Tuesday March 21, 2023
Live Event Time: 2:00 PM (Dubai Time)
Hosted by Thomson Reuters and GLA & Company
Data protection in the states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is not governed by a harmonized legal framework, unlike the European Union. There is no specific legislation dedicated to protecting privacy and data, but privacy is still protected through general legal provisions. As a result, the protection of personal data may vary between the different countries in the GCC.
This absence of specific legislation means that the protection of personal data and privacy in the GCC may be limited, compared to other regions such as the European Union, which has strong data protection regulations in place, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Instead, the protection of privacy and personal data in the GCC may be based on more general provisions of law, such as civil and criminal codes, which may not be as effective in addressing specific issues related to data protection. Hence, this can also make it challenging for companies operating in the region to ensure that they are complying with the varying laws and regulations of each country.
In this complimentary webinar co-hosted by GLA & Company and Thomson Reuters, we will present an overview of the data protection related laws and regulations in key GCC states, particularly Kuwait, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia. We will take a closer look at the Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL) including the enforcement of any data protection laws and regulations in those states. In addition to any, anticipated developments in relation to data protection legislation and regulations in the various GCC states.
Key takeaways from this online panel discussion will include:
- An overview of the laws, regulations and policies that cover data protection and data privacy for various GCC states.
- A closer look at the Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL) for various GCC states.
- Who Will Be Overseeing the Enforcement of PDPL and whether there are any exemptions.
- Anticipated developments in relation to data protection legislation and regulations in the various GCC states.
