Beth Magnuson is a Senior Specialist Legal Editor for Thomson Reuters Practical Law, focused on providing reliable data privacy and cybersecurity resources to help counsel understand and keep up-to-date with this ever-changing global practice area. The content that Beth develops and maintains addresses a wide variety of data protection topics, including on the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), cross-border personal data transfers, US Federal privacy laws like the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), drafting privacy policies, using personal data for targeting advertising, and complying with state laws like the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), the Colorado Privacy Act, and other state consumer privacy and data breach statutes. Beth received her JD from Duke University School of Law. She also holds CIPP/US, CIPP/E, and CIPM certifications from the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP).

Beth joined Practical Law from Oracle, where she was managing counsel, responsible for privacy and security matters. Her prior positions at Oracle (formerly Sun Microsystems) focused on trademark and copyright matters. Before that, she was special counsel with Faegre & Benson, general counsel of Pumpkin Masters, a seasonal products company, and an intellectual property associate at both Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner and Welsh & Katz (now Husch Blackwell).

Dana also served as special counsel at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP, where she advised clients on global data protection issues arising in cross-border data transfers, data breach preparedness and responses, and data breach litigation strategy.
